Questioning technology through literature and other media (19th century – present)
Silicon Valley companies and their star CEO advertise a very positive and idealised vision of technology. In their discourse, each innovation bears the mark of progress and open a window onto the future. Speaking in the name of “humanity”, they also situate this future in space – in orbit around the earth, on the moon, and other planets – or in a parallel digital universe, the “metaverse”. Back on earth they depict technology as the key to improving the human being and solving contemporary environmental issues. Yet, this vision as well as technologies themselves and their development are far from being neutral.
In this course, students will improve their level of English by discussing some problematic aspects of technology, through various examples situated from the industrial revolution to the present. These may include Western and non-Western imaginaries of the technological future, the question of surveillance and democracy, the discourse on technical progress during the colonial period, the persistence of neo-colonial forms of exploitation, the gendered and racial prism of technologies, the role of technology in the current environmental crisis, etc.

Les entreprises de la Silicon Valley et leur patrons faisant figure de célébrités tendent à véhiculer une vision particulièrement positive et idéalisée de la technologie. A travers leur discours, chaque innovation porte la marque du progrès et permet d’entrevoir une image du futur. S’exprimant au nom de l’« humanité », ils situent également ce futur dans l’espace (en orbite autour de la terre, sur la lune ou d’autres planètes) ou dans un univers digital parallèle, le « métavers ». Sur terre, ils définissent la technologie comme l’élément clé dans la création d’êtres humains augmentés et la résolution des problèmes environnementaux contemporains. Néanmoins, cette vision ainsi que les technologies elles-mêmes et leur développement sont loin d’être neutres.
Dans ce cours, je propose aux étudiants d’améliorer leur niveau d’anglais à travers l’analyse d’aspects problématiques de la technologie, via divers exemples situés entre la révolution industrielle et aujourd’hui. Pourrons être évoqués les imaginaires Occidentaux et non-Occidentaux du futur technologique, la tension entre dispositifs de sécurité et démocratie, le discours entourant le progrès technique durant la période coloniale, la persistance de formes néocoloniales d’exploitation, le prisme genré et racial inscrit au sein des technologies, le rôle de la technique dans la crise environnementale actuelle, etc.
