Littérature TD : Théâtre Renaissance / Renaissance drama.

While this course, which is taught in English, offers a general approach to Shakespeare’s drama, it also proposes to discuss the presence and the role of liars in western culture and thought. After focusing on cross-dressed characters in comedies, this course now proposes to turn to the tragic mode and to the study of characters that stand out as major dramatic engines: villains. As a matter of fact, a good villain makes a good play! Much of the power of Othello is due to the mesmerizing fascination exerted by Iago. To analyze lies and liars in William Shakespeare’s Othello (Arden edition) this course will necessarily make inroads into theology and philosophy. These swerves will help reconsider the conventional borderline between deceit and sincerity. The study of propaganda and conspiracy theories will help shed light both on the mechanisms of the tragedy of Othello and on the complexities of our modern society. The study of blackness - Othello is a Moor - will also be given pride of place in this course.
The CM will provide the theoretical background (covering both the Renaissance stage and the study of drama as a specific genre that requires specific analytical tools) while the TD will consist of close analyses of extracts from Othello.
