This seminar aims at understanding the mechanisms which led a country such as South Africa to develop a system orf racial segregation and then to abandon it to follow the path to freedom and democracy. The session will be divided into three parts

1/ South African History from early SA up to Apartheid

2/ Apartheid

3/ Postapartheid South Africa

Students will be asked to have a good knowledge of the history of South Africa, to be able to understand the differenet aspects fo Apartheid racial segregation and to understand the modern developments of that country.

The final written exam wiil be based on the analysis of several documents that will encompass all the aspects studied during the semester.
